Lyrics
Bitter winter afternoon, shake the snow off our shoes
Then cross the threshold into the ol’ homestead
A divorced couple begins to croon a surreal twist on a Crosby tune
Seven fishes, wine, Italian bread
Just a spark of joy through the thicker gloom
From my chosen seat, edge of the room
There’s so much to say, I wish I could today
The children sneak up to the top, but cannot deceive the crazy cop
Who swiftly snags them on the narrow stairs
A controversy soon ensues on etiquette and the proper rules
With exaggerations coming from each chair
We’ve become obsessed with the token
While few words of worth are spoken
As there is much to say, I wish we could today
What is Christmas if we don’t know who we really are?
What’s the journey for if we can’t find a guide…
In the brightest star? That star
We should hash it out right here at the kids’ table
Before the opportunity is lost
I should’ve worked it out there at the kids’ table
For ultimately I’ll be bearing the cost
Once the children have all grown and I’m still there alone
