Old Dogs

Sometimes we must love twice as much
Just to see half the love get through
Sometimes we must climb twice as high
Just to get ourselves an appropriate view
Sometimes we’ll cover twice the distance
Just to bring it all back home
Yet sometimes we still find ourselves all alone

Sometimes we need to learn twice as much
Just to articulate one simple fact
Sometimes we’ve got to swing twice as hard
Just to prove that we are willing to act
Then sometimes we must retreat twice as far
Just to avoid the latest fight

Old dogs still maintain all the wisdom
Still retain all the soul
From a much greater distance although, oh

Sometimes we will cry twice the tears
Just to prove that our heart is for real
And sometimes we’ll experience twice the fears
Just to prove we are not made of steel
Sometimes we need to pray twice the prayers
Just to get through the dark night
